The new George Wythe High School (RHSA), a.k.a Richmond High School for the Arts, project involves the construction of a two-story building spanning approximately 281,969 SF on a 27.8-acre site, primarily over the existing sports fields. The current school will be demolished after the new one is completed. The new RHSA will accommodate 1,800 students, with the potential to expand to 2,000. It will feature two classroom wings, an auditorium, a gymnasium, and a core area. The structure will combine steel framing and load-bearing masonry, with sustainability features aiming for LEED Silver certification, including on-site vehicle charging stations. Site improvements will connect the school to the street and internal areas, ensuring ADA compliance. Outdoor seating, protected from wind and shaded by the building, will be complemented by adjacent landscaping and shade structures in the courtyard to enhance comfort and plant viability. New sports facilities, including tennis, basketball, football, soccer, and baseball fields, are planned for the location of the current school building.
