NORFOLK — Fans ate, drank, played cornhole and generally got reacquainted with each other as dusk began to fall on Old Dominion’s campus Friday.

Near the hundreds of tailgating tents shading thousands of fired-up fans from a brutal afternoon sun, ODU’s marching band pounded out a staccato beat as it made its way toward S.B. Ballard Stadium.

There, most of the sellout crowd on hand to see the Monarchs take on Virginia Tech had reached seats by the time four skydivers spun down through the stadium and onto the field, one carrying the game ball and another with an American flag tailing.

It was the first sellout at the stadium since the 2019 season opener against Norfolk State. It also marked the first time that ODU opened a season against a Power Five team at home.

After Gov. Glenn Youngkin presided over the pregame coin toss, ODU’s Dominik Soos sent the opening kickoff spinning into the air at 7:04 p.m.

The people cheered. College football was back.
